Last weekend was our middle school overnight. Despite lots of rain, we had a good time. We left school at the beginning of 7th period and drove over to Loerrach, where we stay at a youth hostel. Typically we play games outside, but because of the weather we played big group games in the common room.

Following the games, we had a tailgate party outside. (It's much cheaper for us to bring our own food, but the hostel forbids us from bringing it inside...) Usually students cook their hotdogs over the open flame and then enjoy roasting their marshmallows to make s'mores. This time, Lee Evans cooked the hot dogs in Kandern and brought them to us in a makeshift "hot box." The kids went through the line and got all their food, then wandered into the woods where the rain wouldn't fall in them. We managed to get the fire going long enough to do s'mores, but after that we were ready to head back to the warmth and dryness of inside. After the kids changed into warm clothes, we gathered in the common room again to watch "Rocket Man" and have a time of worship led by the Blackstens, a new family at BFA. Brandon challenged the students with Colossians 3:23 - Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for man. Pray that our middle schoolers would work at everything - school, relationships, music lessons, sports - with all their heart and serve the Lord this year. I'm so excited for another year in the middle school!!

On Saturday morning we had breakfast then room cleaning. After loading all the luggage into the vans, we embarked on the traditional hike, which would take us on a 1.5-hour loop into Switzerland and back into Germany. I enjoy these times with the students because I get time to simply walk and talk with them. For this hike I spent my time with a few sixth grade girls and got to pick their brains a little about being in middle school. I also learned some things from them that will help me teach them better.

Despite being soggy we had a great time together. Thank you for your prayers and support that allow me to not only teachat BFA, but truly invest in the lives of my students in ways like this.
