Lugano 2011 - Day 2

Wednesday was devoted to physical education.

Mount San Salvatore

We left our hostel at 10 am and drove to downtown Lugano, where we took the funiculare up to the top of Mount San Salvatore. San Salvatore has an elevation of 912 m, while the coast sits around 282 m. Just in case you were wondering.

At the top of the mountain we admired the view and shouted Sono Libero: Italian for I am free and catch phrase of the book Bloomability, which the students read in English class (and takes place in Lugano). Then began the downhill 10k trek that would take us to the southern tip of the peninsula. One wouldn't expect downhill to be so bad, but when you factor in 1,500 awkwardly sized stone stairs, suddenly your legs are quivering like a bowl full of jell-o and there's nothing you can do to stop it!

Red = our hike (~10k), Blue = our ferry trip

Around 4:00 we reached the coast of the peninsula and the town of Morcote. Once there, students kicked off their shoes and calmed their throbbing feet in the cool lake. A splash war may or may not have also taken place. Others sampled gelato and wandered in and out of shops on the lakefront while we waited for our ferry to arrive, which took us back to Lugano/Paradiso. From there we drove back to Magliaso and our hostel, where students promptly jumped into Lake Lugano (after wolfing down their dinner, of course!!).

filthy from the hike!
That evening we had worship, devos, and more Minute to Win It. After the kids were dismissed to get ready for bed, several of us had our own competition, playing Face the Cookie with After Eight mints. These are very thin versions of peppermint patties that will melt on your face if you take too long to complete the task. It definitely upped the stakes a bit!
